No One Has A Good Excuse For Becoming Angry Quickly

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” (James 1:19)

We do not have an excuse to become angry quickly at others. We should always stop and think things through. We are not God, and we do not always understand the situation completely even when we think we do. We should be merciful to others as God is merciful to us.

  1. Sometimes that is the hardest thing to do. Even, if not more so, becoming angry at ourselves so quickly. The key is perhaps to have some method of slowing down the mind…whatever works for the person. For me, it’s trying to pay attention to my breath for at least 10 minutes a day. For others, it’s a walk in the park or reading a holy book. Either way, without practice, it is very hard to soothe an agitated temper :)

  2. Controlling your breathing pattern is a good start. A lot of people do that approach to help themselves get control of their emotions when their feelings have been suddenly hurt.

But you need a long term solution too. You must resolve the spiritual issue in your own soul that made you angry.

There are two things you may need to do. 1. Repent. Sometimes it’s not the other person’s fault that I am angry. Sometimes the anger is the result of my own sin. Then I need to admit my sin and change.

    2. Forgive. Sometimes I am angry because someone did something really bad to me. Rather than hate them for it, I need to pity them, knowing that God will judge them for it if they do not repent. Instead of hating them I should feel compassion for them and pray for them.
